Trail Running in Nepal

Trail running in Nepal is one of the most unique ways to experience the Nepal's mountains, forests, villages, and Himalayan landscapes. From short forest trails around Kathmandu Valley to demanding ultra-distance routes in the high Himalayas, Nepal offers trail running experiences for beginners, experienced mountain runners, and professional ultra-runners.

With its combination of dramatic elevation changes, ancient mountain trails, diverse landscapes, and strong local communities, Nepal has become an increasingly important destination for trail running, mountain running, fastpacking, and ultra-distance racing.

Whether you are looking for a weekend trail run near Kathmandu, a multi-day fastpacking adventure, or an international ultra-trail race, Nepal provides opportunities across a wide range of distances and elevations. Nepal has trails from one day short run up to 1600km longer crossing the Nepal from the Himalayas running Great Himalayan Trail or making a big circuit of the Kathmandu valley 160km in one go or five days multi stage run.

What Is a Trail Running in Nepal?

Trail running in Nepal means running on natural and mountain terrain rather than primarily on paved roads. Nepal's trail network includes forest paths, mountain ridges, stone stairways, traditional village trails, dirt tracks, and historic routes connecting rural communities.

Unlike road running, trail running in Nepal often involves significant elevation gain and loss. A relatively short distance can therefore become physically demanding.

Trail running routes can be found throughout the country, including:

  • Kathmandu Valley Rim (MTR)

  • Annapurna region

  • Everest region

  • Mustang

  • Manaslu

  • Langtang

  • Dolpo

  • Pokhara and the surrounding hills

  • Eastern Nepal

  • Far-western Nepal

  • Great Himalayan Trail

This diversity makes Nepal suitable for both short trail runs and long-distance ultra-marathons.

Why Trail Running in Nepal Is Special

Nepal is internationally known for the Himalayas, but trail running offers a different way to experience the country.Instead of simply viewing the mountains from a viewpoint, runners travel through the landscapes under their own power.
