The Backyard Ultra is a unique type of endurance challenge where every athlete runs a 6.706 km loop every hour. The race continues until only one person remains to complete the final loop, and they are declared the winner. The Pokhara Backyard Ultra 2.0 was organized by Fit Nepal, a group that has helped bring this type of event to Nepal.
The first Backyard Ultra in Nepal was held in Suryabinayak, Kathmandu, where Arjun Kulung Rai was the winner. This second edition was held in a place called Balam, about an hour's drive from Pokhara.
The Race
A total of 55 athletes participated in the Pokhara event, including two female runners, Padam Kumari Sunuwar and Anita Rai. Padam Kumari successfully completed 12 loops, qualifying for a cash prize.
The men's field was highly competitive, and the weather presented a significant challenge, with rain and lightning throughout the night. Despite the conditions, Bijay Rana Magar of Team Trailmandu was the last person standing. He completed 25 loops, covering a total distance of 174 km with an elevation gain of 5,800 meters.
Backyard Ultras in Nepal are particularly challenging due to the significant inclines. However, a major benefit for participants is that they receive ITRA points, which help them improve their global ranking.
Team Strategy and Future Outlook
According to the team manager and co-founder of Team Trailmandu, their team came to the race fully prepared. They provided comprehensive support, including food and other supplies at the finish line, which was a key factor in motivating Bijay to push his limits and secure the title. The manager, who is also the race director for the 2025 Manjushree Trail Race and the KVR Stage/Summit Challenge, noted that a strong team strategy for hydration and nutrition is crucial for athletes in upcoming races.
Nepal has immense potential for adventure sports tourism, but this potential can only be fully realized if the government and related industry leaders focus on developing their knowledge of both sports and tourism.
Fit Nepal has already announced the Backyard Ultra 3.0, with the location to be revealed soon. These events are designed to be fun for friends and family to attend, as spectator support helps motivate runners and reduces the workload for organizers.
